The Kumihimo Disk and Plate are both a great way to introduce kumihimo to your children and friends.They travel well and make wonderful tools for experimenting and sampling braids.
 

The Kumihimo Disk is six inches in diameter and made of 3/8" dense foam. It is sturdy and holds the threads firmly. The experienced braider will enjoy using this disk to make samples and for portable projects.

We offer Instructions in English. They are in color, two pages for eight end round braids, one eight end flat braid and a sixteen end round braid. There is also information on thread selection, using EZ Bobs and adding beads to braids. $3.00

Our Kumihimo Disk Kit includes a Disk, instructions in English, eight small EZ Bobs and yarn (8 ends each 1 yard long; "end" is a weavers term meaning "thread or yarn"), $17.95.


Kumihimo Accesssories (Makiko Tada, consultant) is a companion to the disk. It is written in Japanese and has clear photos and graphics of several braid structures and motifs illustrating how the braids change simply by changing the colors before braiding starts. We provide English notes. Softcover, 54 pages.

Comprehensive Treatise of Braids VI: Kumihimo Disk and Plate by Makiko Tada. Makiko is the creator of the disk and plate and with this book she shows us how to use these tools to make Japanese and Andean braids as well as new types of braids that she has designed.

Rodrick Owen's book, Braids - 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru and Beyond, is included as it has instruction for the disk and plate along with marudai instruction. Cut more slots into the sides of the Hamanaka Plate to make some of these braids.

Makiko Tada's book Comprehensive Treatise of Braids II: Andean Braids, is listed as well. Almost all the drafts are also offered on the plate, you will need to cut more slots in in the plate for these drafts too.

E-Z Bobs allow the braider to control long warps on the disk and plate; depending on the thickness of the thread used, up to four yards can be loaded onto the small bobbins. Adjust the Bobs so that they all hang three to four inches under the disk or plate and make yards of braid.
